What is required of me to apply?

-Associates or bachelors degree

-If only possessing an Associates Degree, a TEFL Certificate is required

-Must be a US citizen with native English speaking and writing ability

-Have a US passport to fly internationally

-A clean background record

-Ability to pass basic health check

-A letter of recommendation

What is a TEFL certificate, how long does it take to complete, and how much does it cost?

-A TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate is an internationally recognized, entry-level credential that qualifies individuals to teach English to non-native speakers worldwide or online. It validates training in essential skills like lesson planning, classroom management, and teaching methodologies. Most reputable jobs require a minimum of 120 hours of accredited training. This can be accomplished entirely online for around $100 - $300 depending on the TEFL company.  If you have a Bachelor's degree this isn't required but is helpful. We can recommend one if you need.

Do I need to know or speak Mandarin Chinese to apply?

-Knowing Mandarin Chinese is not required. However, knowing some basic phrases can be very helpful. If you’d like, you can take Chinese classes in your free time after you arrive in Taiwan. But most people can usually pick up some basic Chinese naturally from the environment.

What kind of people usually apply for this opportunity?

-Our past employees are usually recent college graduates around 21-25 years old. Because our school and student’s parents place the highest trust in our BTA employees, we are looking for people of good character, honest, hard working, and who also have high standards.

If I apply, am I guaranteed a spot with BTA?

-Part of this screening process is also to see if this is a good fit for you. By talking to a BTA rep, you can understand what it’s like to live abroad and what the schedule of your day might look like. We will answer any questions or concerns you have. When you are interested in joining our team, we will schedule an interview in person or online. If you pass the interview process, you will be invited to join our team!

How will I know if I’m a good fit for this program?

BTA employees will be:

-Highly motivated

-Having a good attention to detail

-Flexible in new environment and roles

-Coachable and willing to learn new skills

Do you have any opportunities shorter than a year?

-We find that most teachers who come to Taiwan for teaching almost always ask to extend their contract longer. Most will typically stay around 2 years because they love it so much. The government-issued visa and work contract is valid for one year.  Short term internships may be available. Please contact us for more information.

Life in Taiwan

What's the process after I arrive in Taiwan?

-We understand it's a long way to travel to Taiwan so we will be there waiting at the airport to personally welcome you!  We will help transport you and your belongings to your new area and apartment.  The first week will be about familiarizing yourself with the area, culture, and rules. We may take a small day trip to show you around, try some food, and enjoy the scenery. We then will offer training classes to help you be a successful teacher.  Our staff is made up of American and Taiwanese and all are committed to being helpful and friendly. After training, you will first be an assistant to help with the class management and later will become the main teacher when ready. Teaching isn't hard, but it takes some practice. We will help you every step of the way and will be the most fun job you've ever had.

What rules must I follow while being employed by BTA?

-BTA maintains rules to protect its students, teachers, parents, and most importantly its employees. This is a high standard program where you’ll be representing the people of America, Utah, and BTA.

BTA’s code of conduct:

-Obey the local laws

-Avoid vulgar/profane language

-No illegal drug or substance use

-Observe a neat and clean appearance

-Abide by the rules set forth by the school

-Keep work area tidy and organized

-Be punctual for work and meetings

-Maintain a clean apartment

-Put forth your best effort

-Have fun!

How will my skills improve with BTA? Is it difficult if I've never taught before?

-Whether you've taught before or this is your first time, each month you’ll see dramatic self-improvement from the previous month. The first few weeks you’ll be settling into your groove, seeing what works and what doesn’t. It’s ok to make mistakes and adjustments. It’s a perfect and safe environment for learning and improving your teaching. At about 2-3 months you’ll feel you’re getting the hang of the routine, and knowing the expectations and flow of things. After about 6 months you’ll be fully confident and teaching will come much more naturally.

We provide regular teacher training and positive feedback. Guest speakers who specialize in different fields are also invited every 1-3 months to train us on specific skills.

Which area of Taiwan will I be assigned to?

-Our main location is located in northern Taiwan. Depending on the needs of the school and the time of year, other locations may also be available.

Can I choose which area of Taiwan I want to stay?

-As of now, the main branch located in the north will take precedence. If there are other opportunities at the time of hire, we’ll gladly inform you!

What’s transportation like in Taiwan?

-You will live 5 min bike ride from the high speed rail. This is prime location! The high speed rail conveniently connects you to the entire island! This allows you to explore and travel quickly, safely, and is very affordable. There is also You-bike next to the apartment which allows you to rent a bike. If your ride is under 15 minutes, it’s completely free. Otherwise it will cost less than $1 USD.

What financial responsibility is required of me?

-Your flight to Taiwan is the main expense you will need to cover. It’s also helpful to have some cash when first arriving in Taiwan to help for an easy transition for buying food or any needed items. If you need help covering the cost of the plane ticket, please let us know and we can discuss different options to help! After you get settled in, you’ll receive a steady paycheck to support yourself.

What about rent, utilities, and other costs of living? What's the area like?

-With our main branch, we have a large shared apartment dedicated for the teachers to live in free of charge. It is super clean and in a nice area with many local conveniences and amenities. Within 10 minutes of walking, there are grocery stores, convenience stores, HSR, pharmacy, doctor clinic, parks, shopping, movie theater, pro baseball stadium, and many other exciting and modern amenities. You will be responsible for utilities shared amongst the other teachers in the apartment.

How do I set up cell phone service, and how much is it per month? How do I pay the bill?

-We can help you set up a local phone plan with unlimited data. The monthly cost is about $22 USD a month. You can pay your monthly phone bill at the local convenience store every month which is super easy.

What is it like to be a teacher in Taiwan?

-The students in Taiwan are always so excited to meet new teachers and foreigners. You'll feel like you've made so many little friends and you'll learn a lot about yourself abroad. This can be a time of growth for your personal life and helping give you valuable work experience. When you're not teaching, there are hundreds of new experiences to be had that can only be experienced in Taiwan.

Is it difficult to teach?

-Our teachers say that the first day they feel some small nerves. But once they get started, they realize it's just like playing with kids!  Many times it won't actually feel like "work." Teaching can be very fun and rewarding for both teachers and students.

What is a typical class like?

-Usually classes start with some kind of warm-up activity. We may do some stretching or small exercise to help the students feel relaxed. Then we may review content from the previous class. Students may try to complete a review exercise from the smart board. Students have personal reading time so you can walk around and monitor their reading progress. We may do some phonics activities, or learning new vocabulary words. We often use games to learn new concepts or review material. The students are usually very happy to learn and demonstrate their abilities to speak and read in English.

How does BTA compare with other service abroad or international working programs?

-The great thing about this opportunity is that there are also service opportunities available if desired. BTA offers higher pay than other programs, bonuses and work incentives, travel abroad opportunities, and the opportunity to shape many students lives while getting paid. The ground work has been done for you. Just show up, do your best, and get ready to create unique and special memories you can only experience overseas. We can guarantee that this will be a special time in your life filled with personal growth.  This is why most teachers extend their contracts.

What does a typical day look like?

-A typical teacher's schedule doesn't start until around 12:30 which leaves the morning open for many things. You can go to the gym or park, join a badminton club, enroll in Chinese language classes, explore nearby cities, go to the beach, visit a temple, go on a hike, or run personal errands. You'll never run out of new things to try.

You may teach between 1-3 classes throughout the day. When not teaching you might be preparing a lesson plan or making a PPT for a class.
